My favourite films of the year. Without hanging around.....

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist: I think that this is the first movie i seen this year actually. Went to the cinema with Dave and Greig, driven by Greig aswel which was fun ! I just loved it, i have watched it about 10 times over the course of the year too, as recently as Tuesday infact ! It's a simple enough little story, and just (on paper) a very indie movie, but once you enter into the film and get a feeling for it, it becomes so much more then that. Trust me, watch it, you'll love it.

(500) Days Of Summer: I went into this movie expecting it to be good, not great, but good. I left feeling like i had just viewed something totally unique, and very, very special. Seriously it was that amazing. It doesn't compare to any other run-of-the-mill romantic comedy i've ever seen. Mainly (in my opinion) as it's really not a rom-com but that's a debate for another day. Two top notch performances from the two leads, and some excellant direction and a fantastic soundtrack. Furthermore it's the closest i've came to crying in a cinema all year. Go see !

Sunshine Cleaning: This is is a quirky little drama based around a very original concept and starring two of the best actresses of their generation. It's essentially just a feel good movie. It doesn't challenge ny pre-conceptions you might have of the concept, as it basicly is exactley what it says it is, it's not trying to be overly clever or something it's not. Just a very charming and nice movie. Give it a watch.

Adventureland: I adored this film. Again it's a simple concept, this the story of a young man, just out of high school, and him having that one sumer that changes his life. Kristen Stewart (Yes... Bella from twilight) gives a career best perfromance as the emotional and isolated girl who is the real star of the film. Watchin her car crash of a life move from one horrible incident to another makes the movie at times a dificult viweing experience but ultimatly very rewarding. I don't think this film was around very long in cinemas which is a shame but it's definatly available on dvd, so keep an eye out for it.

Moon: I stumbled into this film just cause their was nothing else to see really. It's a strange one 'cause as i watched it, i didn't really care for it that much. Seemed to me to be just another sci-fi movie, a genre which i'm not overly keen on anyway. However afterwards i was struck by how the movie kept playing at me, i couldn't stop thiking about it. It has some fantastic shots, and looks great, but also it has something to say and will make you think, something which is often missing in the cinemas. I wouldn't exactley call it a classic but it certaintly one of the must see movie's of the year.

Up: Yes, i'm well aware that it was kids movie, but that doesn't take away the fact that it was absouloutly incredible too. Overall the films great, but the opening montage, which lasts about 10 minutes gove or take, is just about one of the most heartbreakingly beautful things ever put on a screen. Unless you are totally heartless you will be touched by it. The rest of the film is brilliant too, probably my top Pixar film actually, which is high praise indeed, as they have yet to make anything that is not brilliant.

Me and Orson Welles: This was the last great movie i saw in 2009, infact it's the last film i seen at the cinema fullstop. The trailer for this got me very excited, purely as a lover of Orson Welles movies. The inclusion of Zac Efron in the cast also intrigued me, as i have always wanted to see whether the boy can act. And he can, very well as it turns out ! So can Claire Danes, who is so appealing in this performance that you can see entirely why she is in so much demand throughout the movie. Anyway, this is a little gem of a movie, try and find it and watch it, it really is great.

Coraline: Another animated flick, but a completely differant experience. For starters i would say that this isn't a kids film. It genuinaly has the potential to scare a child witless for weeks. It's created by Henry Sellick, best known for directing 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and it is very close in tone to that, although maybe a little bit more disturbed and grotesque. The message is very simple, but also true, and i havn't encountered anybody who wasn't atleast someway entertained by this strange little masterpeice.

Star Trek: I'm not a fan of star trek. Not because i think badly of it, purely because i've never really looked into the tv series or films. However i felt that this was a movie i'd need to see, just because it was gonna be big. And i loved it, it isn't especially clever, or even that original, but what it does and does so well, is to make a 50 year old tv show become relevant. It's just amazing entertainment, and sheer escapism. The cast are all stunningly attractive, the Enterprise is amazing and the rest of the film just looks great ! If you can see the film on a Blu Ray Dvd do that aswel, because in truth, 90% of this films beauty is in it's presentation.
