This is a little excert from the script to the movie 'Fast Times At Ridgemount High'. I freakin love this film, and i was watching it the other night with my houseguest and it dawned on me that this dialogue had always totally passed me by. Which is criminal as it is pretty damm brilliant... Enjoy.

The notebook
I'm lying in bed, watchin this again just now. Omg ! It's absoloute agony. Just so fucking sad.
Instead of waffling on for ever I'll just keep this quite short. Not only is this one of the most quotable, powerful, affecting films of the 21st century, it's also just magical. Every emotional curve it throws out is felt. Especially by anyone who can lay claim to the (not so great) feeling of having their heart built up, before being painfully torn apart !

(500) Days Of Summer
Wow ! I saw this film the other night right, completely and utterly brillaint ! Seriously, almost faultless. The best film i've seen in the cinema since the Dark Knight last July. That good, honestly, i love it !
It's sorta been advertised as a rom-com type film, but it's most certaintly not that. Think of it more as the anti rom-com. It doesn't follow any of the conventional narrative structures of those films, going with a non linear structure instead. This can be tricky to pull of, but it works well ! Especially in the context of the movie. It doesn't have the typical happy ending, or predictable path from begining to end, it really just does it's own thing to be honest and works well. It even smartly references Fench new wave cinema ! Quite a unusual thing for a so called 'rom-com' haha.
The movie tells it like it is, non of this hollywood fairytale bullshit. It understands that love fucking hurts and sucks at times, but also that it is the best feeling in the whole world. The audince really feels the emotional arks of all the characters as the so called (500) days progress. It actaully has one of the most heart wrenchin difficult to watch scenes in a movie, ever. The line 'i'm sure... What i wasn't sure of with you' Is soo powerfully delivered it pretty much jumps off screen and punches you right in the gut !
Okay, sooo i could talk about this film all day, but i'll not, i'll just leave it to ya'll to go see, please do it deserves a wide audience !

We Won't Forget About you
John Hughes Died Today. He was 59 years old, just out walkin in New York and had a heart attack. I'm devestated frankly. This man gave the world some of the best film for teenagers ever ! And was the best at writing the way he did. He'll never be topped.
I'd like to say more just now, but i'd rather wait and write something really good. Happy Dark Knight Day
I'm a day late, but i was buzy yesterday so sorry.
One year ago yesterday (July 18th 2008) Saw the release of one of the most brilliant films ever made, and to date the second most succesful..... Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight'.
I'll get it out the way early, the film is amazing, the cast is fantastic, and the late Heath Ledger as the Joker is the best individual performance in a movie for decades ! Ledger was a favourite of mine for a long time and the devestation of his death ramped the longing for this film up even more. However some background info best be given....
To say i was obssessed would be mild term. From the moment the Joker card was turned over in the final seconds of 'Batman Begins' and i left that theatre (In 2005) I couldn't wait for the follow up, the sequal. And so began a very long but ultimatley rewarding 3 years. From the moment that the wheels started runnign on the movie, all the way through casting, to filming begining to the first iconic image of Ledgers Joker. I was there all the way, feeling like a part of the thing itself.
After 3 years of waiting and reading the internet everday (Mention for http://www.batman-on-film.com/.. Best Bat-site on the web) I booked my tickets for the Imax screening at 3:20 Pm, at the Imax screen, at point Orlando. I booked those tickets a month in advance, on the night before my birthday actually (memorable for another reason to be truthful) And finally i was reay to go, one month till i would be sitting there !
The day arrived. 18th July 2008. Me, Dad, Bob and Greig, had a wee drink in the hooters bar just across from the cinema and then sauntered over, in pissing rain may i add. There we had to que for about half an hour, i was close to peeing myself with excitement frankly. Finally we all got in, got seated and waited.
Then the lights dimmed, everybody drew breath, and 3 years of excitement came to a close...
And it was worth every moment of it !

Public Enemies !
Went to the pictures to see Public Enemies last night. It's Johnny Depp's new film which is usually a good sign, plus The steady and dependable Christian Bale. Also has The French actress who won the Oscar a few years ago, Marioun Coultard or something, and someother good people to. Geovanni Ribisi and Channung Tatum to name a few :)
I went in with high hopes, not just cause of a fondness for the lead in it, but also cause i love this entire period of history, depression era America, were criminals knew how to be bad ! None of the shitty, pathetic criminals we've got these days !
Anyway, well i found it to absouloutly fantastic ! The only slight issue was that maybe it was 20 minutes or so too long, but every minute is good enogh that the majority of intelligent people will stay entertained and enthralled. The Director (Michael Mann, btw) has used a clever technique for the big action scenes which is right effective aswel, he's removed the celuloid from the camera, essentially putting the film straight onto digital and giving those momnets a somewhat home-made, realistic feel. Very smart, will probably be use by countless others soon, but to not quite the same standard ! Haha
The film also ranks as one of the single most quotable movies i've ever seen ! Just about every scene has at least one fantastic peice of dialogue. Even the late Clark Gable gets in a few very poignant lines, in a scene when Depp's Dillenger is viewing an Old Gable film at the cinema. Pretty cool :)
Oooh well, that's really i have to say about anything just now, Go see the film folks, it's a belter !

The film also ranks as one of the single most quotable movies i've ever seen ! Just about every scene has at least one fantastic peice of dialogue. Even the late Clark Gable gets in a few very poignant lines, in a scene when Depp's Dillenger is viewing an Old Gable film at the cinema. Pretty cool :)
Oooh well, that's really i have to say about anything just now, Go see the film folks, it's a belter !

I went in with high hopes, not just cause of a fondness for the lead in it, but also cause i love this entire period of history, depression era America, were criminals knew how to be bad ! None of the shitty, pathetic criminals we've got these days !
Anyway, well i found it to absouloutly fantastic ! The only slight issue was that maybe it was 20 minutes or so too long, but every minute is good enogh that the majority of intelligent people will stay entertained and enthralled. The Director (Michael Mann, btw) has used a clever technique for the big action scenes which is right effective aswel, he's removed the celuloid from the camera, essentially putting the film straight onto digital and giving those momnets a somewhat home-made, realistic feel. A Place, Just For Us...
'Just Close Your Eyes, And Keep Your Mind Wide Open'
I'm Crying.
This film makes me cry... Everytime.
Okay, since like nobody has seen it i'll quickly summarise. It's pretty simple to be honoust. Boy from a poor family, is fairly miserable. Then the girl arrives, who is free spirited, attractive and very insightful. Together they rise above all their problems and motivate each other to achieve what they want to. However just as it seems that their friendship is about to move to a new level, the young girl, dies in a tragic accident. Clearly the boy is devastated, and retreats into himself. Before using her memory, as a tool to motivate him to re-create 'their' kingdom, and inviting his little sister to join him.
Okay, so the plot doesn't make it seem all that fantastic, but it's more about the feelings and emotion that the film manages to encapsulate that make this a classic (in my opinion anyway). I have yet to see another film that quite manages to capture the sense of happiness, and excitement that comes with meeting somebody that you know is special. Or the feeling of love growing towards another person, all the quick glances, and awkward little moments. It's all here. Building up to the point of course were the girl dies. At first, as a viewer, you react in the same manner as the boy, complete disbelief, then just like him, as it sinks in, you feel like you've been slapped. You have put so much emotional investment into her, ready to watch the happy ending, and then, just like that, she's gone. It's sickening, but brilliant and unexpected (especially for a Disney film).
So why such a big think for me ? Why has it taken me two years to watch it again. This is my third time by the way. Well, the background is this essentially. When i saw this film in the pictures, almost exactly two years ago, i loved it, and then i bought the Dvd, later that month whilst on holiday in New York, and viewed it again on the night of June 18th i believe. Thing is, looking back, those two occasions mark the last time in my life that i would claim to be completely innocent, i was still a child. Shortly afterwards, about 3 nights after my dvd watching i was let down for the 1st time in my life by a girl. Somebody i really liked, and it went bad, it was nothing really, but at the time it felt like everything. The pain of that never going away untill i found someone else, which of course led to much, much, worse, but as you see it's a never ending cycle frankly, with the period of my life that this film entered into marking the start of it all. The end of my childhood, i'd say.
The reason i've not watched this in two years then, is that i was scared to be dissapointed, becuase i was never quite sure whether my warm feelings towards the film stemmed from the film itself or for what it meant to me on a more personal level. Well after watching i can gladly confirm that the film is beautiful, and now i can truthfully say that is is one of my favourites. It's a weight of my shoulders viewing it again after two very difficult years aswell. It's like i've finally let something go.
The themes of the film do ring quite true to me aswel. The sorta main point is that you should never let others put you down, or drag you with them. It's almost a study on how the individual, despite being mocked, can sometimes find the most happiness. I completely agree with this. Also the scenes which focus on the young kids, coming closer together have an almost poetic feel about them, emphasising the 'fairytale' romance kind of idea. Whilst this almost seems too perfect, the screen chemistry between the actors is brilliant, and strong enough to make you believe that this can happen. And as i have realised on occasions, it does. And the sheer amount of energy and life these feelings can give is amazing ! This movie finds a way to show all of this, without the need for any sappy, cheesy, scenes, which whilst looking nice, are basicly just throwing the events in the faces of the audience, narrative economy i suppose best describes what i'm meaning.
So, in the end, I love this movie, seriously, it ranks up there with my all time favourites ! Watching it again has also reminded me, of a place i was in two years ago, that i know i can never return to, before i was polluted, and troubled. Without any of the baggage i carry around now. Just when i thought romance was simple, and that i would never feel the sense of loss that is felt in here, cause that 'only happens in the films'. I was wrong. But at the time i thought it would never happen to me, i was wrong. But i wouldn't change a minute of it.
As the film teaches, keep an open mind and you'll never know what'll find it's way in there. Mines is never shut, and i like to think that every experience i've faced is there for a reason. And that i'll learn from them, like i did from this film, just under two yeas ago, before it all began.
I really do love this film !
